Beat the Heat: Hydration & Movement Tips

Keep Your Body Cool and Healthy This Summer

Kansas heat can be intense, and staying hydrated is critical for your joints and muscles to function properly. Dehydration can increase cramps, muscle fatigue, and joint pain.

When summer temperatures soar, your body works overtime to keep you cool. This means you lose more fluids through sweat, which can quickly lead to dehydration if you’re not careful. Dehydration doesn’t just make you feel sluggish — it affects how your muscles and joints perform and can increase your risk of strains, sprains, and painful cramps.

To stay ahead of dehydration, aim to drink water consistently throughout the day, not just when you feel thirsty. If you’re spending time outside or being active, bring a water bottle with you and take small sips every 15 to 20 minutes. Electrolyte drinks can also help replenish minerals lost through sweat, especially during prolonged exercise.

What you wear makes a difference too. Choose lightweight, breathable clothing that allows sweat to evaporate and your body to cool naturally. Light-colored fabrics reflect sunlight, helping you stay cooler.

Try to plan your workouts or outdoor activities for the early morning or later in the evening when the sun’s intensity is lower and temperatures are milder. If you do have to be out during the hottest part of the day, take frequent breaks in the shade and listen closely to your body’s signals.

Signs that you may be overheating or dehydrated include feeling lightheaded, nauseous, or excessively fatigued. If you notice these symptoms, stop your activity immediately, rest in a cool place, drink fluids, and don’t hesitate to get medical attention if needed.

At Restore Physical Therapy, we encourage our clients to enjoy an active lifestyle while prioritizing safety. Our team is always here to answer questions about hydration, heat safety, and how to protect your joints and muscles during the hot summer months.
